BlackBerry CEO Confirms BBM Will Be On Android & iOS “Before The End Of Summer”

We had expected BlackBerry Messenger to make its debut on Android and iOS on June 27 thanks to T-Mobile U.K., but when it became apparent that the carrier’s announcement was incorrect, we started to wonder just how long BlackBerry would keep us waiting.

But during a quarterly earnings call this morning, CEO Thorsten Heins again reiterated the company’s plan to make BBM a cross-platform service “before the end of the summer.”

We still don’t have a specific release date, unfortunately, be at least we know that it’ll be here within the coming months. BlackBerry has become known for its lengthy delays recently — following its abysmally late launch of BlackBerry 10 — so many had feared that the Canadian company wouldn’t keep its original promise.

What we do know is that BBM on Android and iOS is likely to be a big hit. There’s already a lot of demand for it, so much so that scammers have begun released fake BBM apps filled with advertising via Google Play, and even set up malicious websites promising BBM beta releases.

When BBM does go cross-platform, it’ll support Android devices running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and above, and iPhones running iOS 6 and above. And of course, it’ll be completely free.
