Garmin’s New Navigation App For Sony SmartWatch 2 To Launch At MWC [Rumor]

Sony has reportedly teamed up with Garmin to develop a new navigation app for the SmartWatch 2, and it’s expected to get its unveiling at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona next week. The app will provide users with turn-by-turn directions on their wrist, negating the need to walk around with their smartphone out.

“According to sources familiar with the matter, all new Sony Smartwatch 2 devices will come pre-installed with the new application,” Pocket-lint reports.

Having turn-by-turn directions on your wrist has obvious benefits: you can navigate around new cities without having to pull your smartphone out — which means it’s unlikely to get dropped or snatched from your hands. And presumably you’ll also be able to use the app in the car, too.

The Pebble smartwatch has already tried to address this need by displaying Google Maps directions that users can follow as they travel, but of course, this is by no means as useful as proper turn-by-turn directions that update as you move, and help you quickly find alternative routes or seek out nearby places on the fly.

This is just a rumor at this point, however, so take it with a grain of salt until it’s confirmed by either Sony or Garmin at MWC.
