Instagram won’t force you to be square anymore
Instagram is no longer a photo sharing service just for squares. The company today announced that it will finally support portrait and landscape photos and videos with its latest updates on Android and iOS.
Since making its debut five years ago, Instagram has only ever supported square images. To upload portrait or landscape snaps, you needed to first add borders to your image using another app before uploading through Instagram. But not anymore.
In the latest Instagram apps for Android and iOS, users will see a new format button when uploading a photo that allows them to choose the ideal option for their image.
Instagram believes the change will be especially beneficial for videos, which are rarely shot in a square format — but also for all those selfies we snap in portrait mode, and the landscapes we shoot in… landscape.
