72.4 Percent Of All Smartphones Sold In Q3 2012 Just Happened To Be Running Android
If you’ve been following the smartphone market at all this past year, then you’ve already heard this song and dance. Regardless of this broken record, it’s still amazing at how Android managed to cannibalize the smartphone market in such a short time. With that being said, I bet you can guess what I’m going to say next. Yep, Android and Samsung are once again on top when it comes to worldwide smartphone sales.
Garnter lays out the numbers for Q3 2012 and it’s all Android and Apple… but mostly Android.
Overall, smartphone sales increased 46.9 percent from the third quarter of 2011. Leading that charge was Samsung, commanding 32.5 percent of the global smartphone market thanks to the strong sales of their Galaxy line. Apple remained in second with 14 percent while all other OEMs combined to make up the remaining 53.5 percent.
When it comes to mobile OS share, Android continues to dominate with almost 3 out of 4 smartphones sold in Q3 2012 running it. Apple’s iOS remains a distant second with only 13.9 percent, but still manages to be the only other mobile OS managing double digit percentages. The rest… simply fighting over the scraps.
Interestingly, for all of the effort Microsoft has been putting into their new products, they barely scraped 2.4 percent market share in Q3 2012. Let’s hope they have better luck in Q4.
