What Delay? Pebble’s iOS App Is Available Now, Android Version Coming Later Today
The first batch of Pebble smartwatches began shipping on Wednesday, nine months after the device broke Kickstarter records by securing more than $10 million in funding. Reports had suggested, however, that the accompanying Pebble iOS app would be delayed due to Apple’s approval process — but it just appeared in the App Store.
Without the accompanying mobile app, the Pebble loses a number of key features and it’s nowhere near as useful. While it will receive notifications and has the ability to control the music on your smartphone, the app’s needed to add new watch faces, perform software updates, and add a whole host of Internet connected apps.
Understandably, then, users were disappointed to hear the app would be delayed yesterday. As it turns out, that’s not the case. Pebble for iOS is already available to download from the App Store, and the Android version will be hitting Google Play later today. Here are some of its features:
– Notifies you when software updates for Pebble ready to install
– Installs and remove custom watchfaces onto your Pebble
– Sends ping test messages to your Pebble
– Helps you troubleshoot issues
The first batch of Pebble watches was believed to include just 500 units, so only a small fraction of its backers will be receiving their orders soon. In an update on its Kickstarter page on Wednesday, the company explained that the device had been hit by “some kinks and issues” that needed to be ironed out.
Pebble did insist, however, that another batch of units will be shipping “soon.”
