The Galaxy Note II’s 5.5-inch display makes it one of the biggest smartphones on the market, but it’s still a pocketable device that can be used comfortably all day every day. Samsung could be planning to make it even bigger next time around, however. According to a source in the company’s supply chain, the Galaxy Note III will have a larger 5.9-inch display with a full 1080p resolution.

The Korea Times reports that the Galaxy Note III will be demoed to AT&T executives in Seoul, South Korea, later this week.

The device will offer a 5.9-inch OLED display with a 1080p resolution, an eight-core Exynos 5 Octa processor, LTE connectivity, and various other features, “though discussions are still under way regarding what they should be,” according to an executive at Samsung’s main parts supplier.

It’s unclear when the device will be announced, or when it will go on sale. However, the Galaxy Note II was launched last September, so we’d expect to see its successor around the same time this year.

Some rumors have suggested that the Galaxy Note III will have an even bigger 6.3-inch display. But according to the source, this is another device Samsung has up its sleeve:

A 6.3-inch phablet is also in the works with the company expected to introduce the model in the first half of this year. The 6.3-inch phablet will be a budget model not a flagship one in line with its strategy to expand product lineups.

I owned a Galaxy Note II for a number of months, and I’ve mentioned before that after using it for a week or so, I got used to its massive display. But I’m not sure whether a 5.9-inch display would be a little too big.

Samsung could make changes to the hardware to make the upgrade more subtle, of course, such as slimming down the bezels either side of the display. But it’s still going to be a huge device.
