At Google I/O this morning, Android head Sundar Pinchai kicked off the keynote by giving us an update on the progress of the Android platform. More than 900 million Android devices have now been activated, and more than 48 billion apps have been downloaded from Google Play.

Quite incredibly, 2.5 billion of those downloads game in the last month alone. It won’t be long, then, before Android catches up to the 50 billion app downloads Apple is on the verge of achieving with the iOS App Store.

Pinchai also announced that Google has paid out more money to Android developers in the last four months than ever before. Revenue per user has also doubled year-over-year.
