DIRECTV has been updated to version 2.5 on Google Play, bringing along a bunch of new features — the main one being the ability to use voice search to find out what’s on TV.

Voice search is everywhere nowadays; Google Glass is controlled via voice commands, Google is expanding its voice controlled search app to pull contact information, and iOS’s Siri is now integrated with the Chevrolet Sonic — so it is no surprise that the emerging technology is finally hitting the TV industry.

The full changelog for the DIRECTV update can be seen below:

What’s new in this version:

  • Just talk as you would to a person and the app finds what you’re looking for.
  • Search for programs by mentioning title, channel, keyword, actor, time frame, genre and more.
  • Switch to TV mode to see your dialogue and search results on your TV screen. HD DVR (HR24+) required. Your phone and HD DVR must be connected to same Wi-Fi network.
  • See personalized recommendations as soon as you switch to TV mode.

One of the biggest bugbears with cable and satellite TV, aside from the excessive commercials, is the amount of time spent searching for shows. This latest update does it’s best to combat this problem by introducing a new method for searching the TV listings.
