Google is in the process of rolling out a much-needed update for its official Play Movies and TV app on the Play Store. This upgrade allows users to get their content offline faster, movies and shows may now be downloaded in HD or SD, there’s also improved video streaming performance for KitKat devices and a shedload of bug fixes and stability improvements.

Having the ability to save HD movies and TV shows in standard definition is definitely the main feature of this update. You may be wondering… “Why would I want to download an SD movie or TV show that I’ve already paid an additional fee for the HD version of?” Well, having the option to choose which version you download gives you the chance to save storage space on your handset, which is particularly useful if your running low or if your device doesn’t support microSD storage.

In addition, the Play Movies and TV development team at Mountain View have also fixed an annoying “Error 31” issue which repeatedly occurred on some devices during playback causing the handset to temporarily freeze and the app to close without warning.

The full changelog for the update can be seen below:

  • Get your content offline faster – now HD movies and shows may be downloaded in HD or SD.
