Nokia X update brings new app switcher and more Microsoft services

A new update rolling out now to the Android-powered Nokia X lineup delivers a new app switcher and pre-installs even more Microsoft services. The release, which is available to download over-the-air, also makes welcome improvements to the Nokia Store.

Today’s update shows Microsoft’s continued commitment to existing Nokia handsets running Android — despite recently announcing that it will make no more Android devices. It’s unclear, however, whether this might be one of the last major updates the Nokia X lineup receives; only time will tell.

Available on the original Nokia X, Nokia X+, and Nokia XL, the update’s most noticeable change is its new app switcher, which is similar to that of the new Nokia X2 (and iOS). It’s accessible by swiping down from the top of the screen, and it provides handy previews that show what’s happening inside the apps you have open.

In addition, this update pre-installs more Microsoft services, OneDrive, OneNote, and Outlook.com, which supports multiple Outlook accounts, push notifications, and calendar and contact syncing.

The Nokia Store also gets some improvements, which promise to make searching, finding, and downloading games even easier. The new Nokia Store also integrates third-party app stores, “meaning all of your app exploring can be done under one roof.” You still won’t find any Google Play apps in there, however.

This Nokia X update is rolling out now over-the-air, so if you haven’t already, you should receive it on your device soon.
