Google’s answer to AppleCare may be on its way to the Play Store
Google looks to be gearing up to launch its own AppleCare rival dubbed “Nexus Protect.” The new protection plan, which has already leaked out via the Google Store, is expected to be made available alongside Google’s new Nexus devices this fall.
“You can’t add this phone unless it has the same Nexus Protect choice as other phones in your cart,” reads the notice spotted by Android Police in the Google Store’s page source. “You can update your choice or purchase this phone in your next order.”
Just like AppleCare, Nexus Protect is expected to be an extended warranty plan that won’t just cover Google’s smartphones, but also other hardware like the Nexus Player, Chromebooks, Android Wear watches, and even the Nest.
It’s thought Google will announce the service alongside its new Nexus smartphones on September 29, however, there’s no guarantee it’s coming at all just yet.
“We’ve seen Google retail programs like this pop up in official documentation and never appear,” Android Police warns. Until Google makes it official, then, don’t count on Nexus Protect to keep your next Android safe just yet.
