Apple’s first Android app is a poison pill
In a bold new move, Apple has just placed its first Android app on the Google Play Store.
No, it’s not Apple Music for Android, but rather Move to iOS, a new app that lets Android switchers easily transfer all their data and information over to a brand new shiny iPhone.
The huge new growth of Android switchers is a great reason to make moving much easier, and Apple is the perfect company to do it.
Apple’s new free Android app will work on all devices running Android 4.0 and later.
“Everything about iOS is designed to be easy,” says Apple on the Google Play app page for Move to iOS. “That includes switching to it. With just a few steps, you can migrate your content automatically and securely from your Android device with the Move to iOS app.”
You don’t need to save your stuff anywhere else before switching to iOS from Android, like you’d have to in the past. The new app will move your contacts, message history, photos and videos, web bookmarks, mail accounts and calendars safely and securely from your Android device to your new iOS one.
Your iPhone (or iPad) will create a private ad-hoc Wi-Fi network and then find your Android device running the new app. Once you enter a security code, the transfer will begin and your iOS device will sort all your Android stuff into the right places. You’ll even have your email account set up in iOS Mail, too. Pretty slick, if you ask me.
