Samsung will spill the beans on Note 7 explosions next week
Samsung will reveal the findings of its internal investigation about the exploding Note 7 smartphones one day before it announces its Q4 earnings, claims a new report.
That would put the date at January 23, after which the company no doubt hopes that the news cycle will quickly move on to Samsung’s earnings for the last three months of 2016.
The Note 7 was originally one of last year’s most promising new handsets, before reports emerged claiming that it was prone to catching fire — resulting in scenarios such as the evacuation of a Southwest Airlines flight after a passenger’s Note 7 emitted a thick grey-green smoke and burned a hole in the plane’s carpet.
Samsung initially carried out a recall of the handset, before cancelling the device altogether after replacement units also started catching fire. In the aftermath, it was suggested that Samsung may have rushed the device to market due to its confidence that the iPhone 7 would turn out to be an uneventful dud in the market place.
Preliminary reports about the cause of failure for the Note 7 have pinned the blame on too little space being provided for the device’s battery to expand into. As per a report from Instrumental, the widest gap between the Note 7 battery and its case was just 0.5mm, while at one point it measured less than 0.1mm.
Samsung is expected to describe battery-related issues, claims a source speaking with Reuters. Investors and analysts have said that it is critical that Samsung break down in detail what went wrong with the Note 7 and how it will avoid making the same mistakes in the future.
