This unashamed iPhone 7 clone is a fraction of the cost
iPhone clones just hit a new low.
Meet the UMIDIGI G, a device that isn’t ashamed to be a complete ripoff of Apple’s latest smartphone. It runs Google’s latest Android 7.0 Nougat operating system, and it’s super-affordable at just $79.99. Its specifications aren’t bad, either — but you shouldn’t buy one.
We’ve seen dozens of iPhone lookalikes over the years, but the UMIDIGI G takes copying to new levels of embarrassing. It’s not just inspired by the iPhone; it is the iPhone… but made using significantly cheaper materials, and specifications, and software.
Having said that, its list of internals reads much like the iPhone 7’s. You get a 5-inch display with a 720p resolution, a quad-core MediaTek chipset, 2GB of RAM, and 16GB of internal storage. There’s an 8-megapixel camera on its back, a 2-megapixel camera on its front, and a 2,000mAh battery.
The biggest difference between the two, apart from the Apple logo, is that the UMIDIGI G runs Android instead of iOS. It’s also made out of a polycarbonate plastic that’s been polishing to look like aluminum, rather than real aluminum.
But if you can ignore all that, and you want a cheap smartphone that looks like an iPhone with Android instead of iOS (and you can excuse the name) you can bag your own UMIDIGI G for just $79.99. You’ll have to import it from China, of course, but pre-sales begin on May 16 ahead of a May 20 launch.
