Galaxy Fold looks uncertain as Best Buy cancels all preorders
The future of Samsung’s first foldable phone looks uncertain again after Best Buy canceled all existing preorders.
The retailer says it wants to put customers first and “ensure they are taken care of in the best possible manner.” It doesn’t want people hanging on for a phone that still has no release date.
There was obviously a lot of excitement over the Fold when it got its initial unveiling. Not only is it Samsung’s first foldable phone, but it should have been the first to actually go on sale, period.
But that still hasn’t happened. Samsung was forced to delay the handset’s launch as a result of design flaws. The South Korean company still hasn’t provided fans with a new launch date.
The state of the Galaxy Fold
In case you hadn’t heard, it became apparent there were problems with the Fold’s design soon after reviewers got early access to the device. A large number of units ended up broken within days.
Samsung was adamant it wouldn’t delay the Fold’s launch initially, but soon changed its mind. It has since been investigating the issues and trying to find a fix.
Fans were promised a new launch date two weeks ago, but Samsung has been worryingly quiet since. One report suggested we could see the Fold in June, but now that seems unlikely.
Best Buy cancels all preorders
Best Buy has confirmed it has canceled all existing preorders for the Fold in the interests of consumers.
“Because we put our customers first and want to ensure they are taken care of in the best possible manner, Best Buy has decided to cancel all current pre-orders for the Samsung Galaxy Fold,” reads a statement on the retailer’s website.
Best Buy doesn’t say the Fold won’t arrive. In fact, it insists “Samsung continues to make progress in enhancing” the device. But it looks like we could be waiting a while for it to arrive; it’s unlikely Best Buy would make this move if a launch was imminent.
If you’re still interested in buying a Fold from Best Buy, you can request to be notified when it’s available to order again. In the meantime, Best Buy says it is working with Samsung to deliver the device “as quickly as possible.”
