Mario Kart Tour picks up multiplayer next month — with a catch
Mario Kart Tour on mobile will finally get its much-anticipated multiplayer mode next month. It will initially arrive in beta, giving players the opportunity to compete online for the first time.
But there’s a catch. You can’t enjoy the beta unless you’re coughing up for the game’s Gold Pass.
Multiplayer has been a staple of Mario Kart. Whether it’s offline with everyone huddled around a single console, like in the good old SNES days, or online against other racers around the world.
It’s one of the things that makes Mario Kart so brilliant, and it is sorely missed in Mario Kart Tour on mobile more than a month after its release. But that’s finally going to change next month.
Multiplayer en route to Mario Kart Tour
Nintendo today confirmed a real-time multiplayer beta test is planned to hit Mario Kart Tour in December. It will be available to those who subscribe to the in-game Gold Pass, priced at $4.99 a month.
It’s not yet clear how long the beta test will last; that will likely depend on how well it goes. But those who don’t have the Gold Pass will have to wait for the beta to finish to enjoy multiplayer support.
If you do decide to subscribe, you will also gain access to Mario Kart Tour’s super-speedy 200cc mode. You will also get some exclusive cosmetics that are unavailable to other players.
Mario Kart Tour a huge success
Mario Kart Tour has gotten off to a spectacular start so far, despite its fair share of criticism. It racked up a whopping 123.9 million downloads during its first four weeks of availability on mobile.
The game has also seen a number of big updates during that time. Its most recent introduced Luigi and a number of other new characters; the one before that added the Tokyo Tour course.
Mario Kart Tour is free-to-play, and you don’t have to spend a penny if you don’t want to. You can download it now from the App Store and Google Play.
