Galaxy-S5-Active-Key

Last year’s Galaxy S4 Active was marketed by Samsung as a waterproof version of the original Galaxy S4 — but there were a number of subtle differences between the two internally. Buying the Active meant you had to settle for a lesser camera — 8-megapixels versus 13-megapixels — and a TFT display over a Super AMOLED one.

There are going to be some hardware differences between these variants this time around as well, it seems — but for 2014, the Galaxy S5 Active has the advantage over the original Galaxy S5. In addition to a barometer, the device has a customizable “Active Key” and what appears to be optical image stabilization.

Despite criticisms about its cheap plastic form factor and slow TouchWiz operating system, the Galaxy S5 has become Samsung’s fastest-selling smartphone to date. The device has been so successful that during its launch weekend earlier this month, it sold more units than the iPhone 5s.

When you buy a Samsung smartphone, you quickly discover that most of its internal storage is taken up by the TouchWiz operating system. That’s because it’s jam-packed with pre-installed apps and features that Samsung believes we all want — but how many of those apps actually get used?

Not many of them. According to data from Strategy Analytics, the average Galaxy smartphone user spends little time with Samsung’s own offerings, with the company’s most popular app getting just 3.9 minutes of use per month.

Samsung’s new Galaxy Gear lineup is already compatible with a whole bunch of existing devices, the South Korean company revealed this week. Including the new Galaxy S5, 12 smartphones and 8 tablets work with the new wearables right out of the box.

A Samsung press event scheduled for April 29 could deliver the first official unveiling of the new Galaxy S5 Zoom. The South Korean company’s invite, which features the tagline “Kapture the Moment,” suggests a photography-focused event just weeks after a new Galaxy Zoom smartphone was pictured out in the wild.
