HTC’s Android 4.4 KitKat update for its flagship One has already rolled out in many markets all around the world — including the U.S. — but in typical Verizon fashion, the carrier is keeping its customers waiting. If you’re one of them, you’ll be pleased to know that it will be arriving “shortly.”

HTC is set to announce its second-generation One — codenamed the “M8” — in March, but like a lot of the devices that came before it, the Taiwanese company has been unable to keep it under wraps until the big day.

Photos of the device that have surfaced online this week reveal a mysterious new sensor that sits above the handset’s rear-facing camera — plus a dual LED flash. The overall look of the handset itself, however, will be almost identical to its predecessor.

HTC’s second-generation One is expected to lose its capacitive buttons in favor of virtual, on-screen buttons just like the LG Nexus 5’s. The new flagship device will reportedly make its debut at a special event in New York City in March, according to the ever-reliable @evleaks.

After Android 4.4.2 KitKat was released by Google, HTC was quick to announce that it would update the carrier variants of the One in the US to KitKat within 90 days. However, a few days ago the company announced that it would be missing its self-imposed deadline as the update has been delayed for at least a couple of weeks.

Now, in a surprising turn of events, Sprint has announced that One owners in the United States can manually pull the KitKat update from their servers with a wider roll-out beginning from 11th February.

Canadian One’s did make HTC’s self-imposed 90 day update deadline, after all. Rogers, TELUS, Bell, Virgin, SaskTel and Wind are now rolling out the much-anticipated over-the-air Android 4.4 KitKat update to all HTC One smartphones currently located in Canada. This upgrade, which weighs in at just under 600MB, brings the latest build of the open-source operating system, in addition to the usual multitude of bug fixes, stability improvements and speed enhancements.
