Over the past month or so, I’ve been asking friends and colleagues whether they’ll be choosing the HTC One M8 or the Samsung Galaxy S5 when it’s time to upgrade their smartphone. A number of the responses have surprised me. Rather than picking the latter — which I assumed most would — several told me they would be waiting for the LG G3 instead.

That wait will end on May 27, when LG will announce its new flagship at events held simultaneously in six cities around the world.

Nexus-4-smashed

I can’t wait to get my hands on the OnePlus One. Its design and specifications make it one of the most exciting smartphones we’ve seen this year; it’s equipped to compete with rivals like the HTC One M8 and the Samsung Galaxy S5. In addition, it’s a steal at $299.

But we know it’s not going to be easy to get hold of one — at least not initially.

You may be tempted to take part in the OnePlus “Smash the Past” competition that gives you the chance to win the new device by smashing up your old one, then — but it’s a downright stupid idea, and you shouldn’t even think about taking part.

OnePlus-One-side

After months of hype and speculation, the OnePlus One finally got its official unveiling today. At just $299 for 16GB of storage and $349 for 64GB, it is perfectly priced to compete with affordable smartphones like the Nexus 5 — but its design and internal specifications are very much taking aim at the latest flagships.

In fact, OnePlus calls its debut smartphone the “flagship killer.” So, does the device have what it takes to take on rivals like the HTC One M8, the Sony Xperia Z2, and the already popular Samsung Galaxy S5? We’ve compiled an in-depth comparison between them all to help you decide.

The new device, which hasn’t yet been confirmed by HTC, is expected to be available next month with a 4.5-inch display, a 13-megapixel camera, and HTC’s latest Sense 6 software.
